Chrysalis Center Receives Walmart Foundation Grant
The Walmart Foundation recently awarded Chrysalis Center a $25,000 grant in support of its Freshplace program. Freshplace is a client-choice fresh food pantry located at Chrysalis Center’s main campus on Homestead Avenue in Hartford.
The program helps 100 low-income North-end of Hartford residents and their families at a time; serving over 350 individuals annually. Freshplace provides a grocery store type setting for its members to choose fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy and other foods that provide healthy and nutritious meal choices. In addition to providing food, Freshplace aims to address the underlying causes of hunger and poverty through a unique and proven method of case management and the creation of a FreshStart plan. Typically, members work on education, employment, housing stability, nutrition, mental and physical healthcare, and entitlements.
Support from the Walmart Foundation and other donations, grants, and fundraising events are vital funding sources for Freshplace. “Chrysalis Center’s philosophy is to help individuals and families with a hand-up not a hand-out. The Walmart Foundation’s generosity will help Freshplace members change their lives not just for a meal or two but for the future as they receive case management services and strengthen their ability to live more independent, self-sufficient lives,” noted Chrysalis Center’s CEO, Sharon L. Castelli. “We are grateful for the Walmart Foundation’s support and their part in transforming the lives of our Freshplace members.”
